Magda Szubanski calls for "fat" people to be protected from online hate speech

Magda Szubanski has called for vilification rules to be put in place for "fat people" online, only to be blasted by her following.

The comedian shared the controversial tweet in which she wondered why "fat" people are not "protected" from hate speech online.

She wrote, "It's interesting to me that you are banned from attacking just about every identity on Twitter except being fat. Why are we not protected from vilification?"

Szubanski was then blasted by several heartless online users, as she received comments such as, "Have another Snickers bar. Sounds like your blood sugar is low," and "Lose some weight then."

Despite receiving plenty of support from fans, the controversial tweet saw more personal attacks.

"Ever see any obese old people? No, because they all die young. If you are going to do that to yourself, then you will have to accept noticing," another wrote.

"Because you choose to be fat," yet another wrote.

Magda was only too happy to call out the backlash, as she accused the online users of dumping their "toxic self-loathing" onto her, as they believe she "wouldn't fight back".

"It's pretty clear from the response to my tweet that some people hate fat people because their own hearts are so full of hate that they need to dump all their toxic self-loathing onto someone who they think won't fight back."

"Well, not this little fat duck. She got teeth," she wrote.

She also went on to say that the online trolls proved her point entirely as many commenters defended her, saying it would go a long way if we were all a little nicer to each other online.

Kath & Kim to return for 20th anniversary reboot

It’s time to crack open the Tia Maria and whack on the footy franks because the foxy ladies of Fountain Lakes are back!

The cast of Aussie TV show Kath & Kim have once again joined forces to record a special project for the show’s 20th anniversary.

Creators Gina Riley and Jane Turner along with stars Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn arrived at the NEP Studios in South Melbourne for filming.

The special one-off is expected to see the famous characters of Kath Day-Knight (Turner), her daughter Kimberly Day Craig (Riley), Kath’s butcher husband Kel (Robbins) and Kim’s husband Brett (Rowsthorn), and second-best friend Sharon Strzelecki (Szubanski) return.

And of course, Kath & Kim’s Brighton alter egos, Prue and Trude will make an appearance.

The reboot is expected to air later in the year with ABC, Seven and Netflix strong contenders for the broadcast.

The first episode of Kath & Kim aired in May 2002 which then saw a legion of fans follow the foxy ladies.

Fans were recently in uproar after the home used in the show, dubbed “Chateau Kath" was demolished after the owner wanted to create a bigger home for her family.

Pete Rowsthorn, who played Brett in the series, said the house contained a lot of memories but it's time to move on.

“It was a weird house, if I bought it I'd probably pull it down too," he previously said.

"It had really quite small rooms … the squeaky back door, that was all natural sound. There was no foley man putting that on top.

"I played cricket in the backyard with Shane Warne, I danced in the garage with Kylie Minogue, I sat and had dinner with Barry Humphries dressed up as a monk.”

Image: Facebook

Is Kath and Kim making a comeback?

Magda Szubanski is keeping tight-lipped on whether or not there will be a reboot of our favourite foxy ladies, Kath and Kim.

The actress, who played Kim’s second best friend Sharon Strzelecki, was asked about whether the rumours could be true.

"If I did I couldn't possibly tell you. If I did, I'd have to kill you and your publishers and everyone else," she told TV Week.

"It would be a bloodbath!"

She was also asked by the publication about whether she will come back as the beloved Sharon Strezelecki.

"Again, I can neither confirm or deny!" she replied.

Back in 2018, Magda mentioned the attention the show was getting years after it ended after Netflix picked it up.

However, Jane Turner who played Kath, said the show would have to be completely modernised to be in tune with today’s lifestyle.

"It would be very different now. There are always funny new trends and things Kath and Kim could put their spin on, which would be fun to do," she previously said.

Then in May 2021 she said she wasn’t exactly “too keen” on creating a fifth season of the show.

"I think it should be off the table... It holds such a special place in people's memories," she told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"If we did a live show, which was a "best of" or something like that, that's different. But to actually try and do a whole new series, I think you can never capture that magic again."

Image: Facebook

The heartfelt way Magda Szubanski remembers Heath Ledger

Comedian and LGBT activist Magda Szubanski has posted a heartfelt tribute to her late friend and worldwide famous actor, Heath Ledger.

In the past, Magda has honoured the late Joker actor in emotional posts to social media and she has proven time and time again she is not one to shy away from remembering Heath.

The pair both went viral in 2006 at the AFI Awards when Magda’s Kath & Kim character ‘Sharon Strzelecki’ met Heath Ledger on the red carpet.

She squealed in excitement from seeing the then 27-year-old and, in a moment no one expected, the actor grabbed ‘Sharon’s’ face and in Magda’s own words “pashed ME!”

The actress hilariously fell to the ground in shock and later presented an award alongside Dannii Minogue to Heath, and joked he had given her a “Heath rash.”

Later, in a 2017 post the beloved Australian comedian took to Instagram to give inside details about their special on-air moment.

“Ah beautiful Heath. This is one of my favourite career moments ever. Heath had no idea I was going to do this,” Magda shared, mentioning the Aussie actor at the time was having a “rough” experience with the Australian media and was “nervous” to be appearing on a red carpet.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Magda Szubanski (@magda_szubanski) on Oct 3, 2017 at 10:36pm PDT

“The producers and I planned that, as Sharon, in her role as stage manager for the event, I would surprise Heath with a "Sharon pash". I'd met him a couple of times and he was such a great guy. When the moment came I was so 'in the moment' I naturally did what Sharon would do: I fangirl screamed.

“Heath had NO idea any of this was gonna happen. But being the magical, receptive actor he was, he totally went with the flow and then upped the stakes even further, grabbed Sharon's (my) face and pashed ME!

“Tell ya, he almost turned me.

“Then the next day he rang me and said he'd had so much fun he wanted to be written into @kathandkim as Sharon's stalker. He and I had a chat about it when I was in London. And then he went off to play The Joker. And well...

“Anyway, this is the beautiful, playful, lighter side of The Joker. I'm so honoured I got to share this moment with him. And as my friend Ron just said, had romance blossomed our love child would've been called #Sheath.

“Always in our hearts #heathledger.”

Heath tragically died in an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2008 in New York, at the age of 28.

He shares one daughter, 13-year-old Matilda Ledger, with American actress Michelle Williams.

Magda Szubanski reveals emotional response to swimsuit photos

Magda Szubanski has tearfully defended her right to wear whatever she likes at the beach on Andrew Denton’s new show Interview on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old actress slammed a series of women’s magazines for publishing images of her in swimwear at the beach in 2011.

The TV icon admitted she was sad when she first saw the photos, but quickly decided: “F**k them! I'm going to go down there with my fat body amongst all the models and just be fat on Bondi Beach.”

She added: “And they can go and get stuffed!

“You know, (they treat you) as if it's a crime to subject people to your fat body on the beach!”

Magda has spoken candidly about her weight and body image.

“I don't feel like a fat person - it was something that happened to me,” she began. “Because I wasn't fat as a kid and I was quite sporty and so (weight) feels like carrying a suit of armour or something.”

She spoke about the time she lost 40kg as ambassador for Jenny Craig, but said she didn't feel “great” like everyone said it would – instead, she felt “odd” and conflicted.

“It does become your second skin. It's something that you're very used to and when I lost all the weight on Jenny Craig, it was quite a weird feeling, actually,” she said.

“People don't think that, they think 'oh, you lose weight and everything's going to be great.'

“And I don't mean to be a whinger about it but there was a candid photo I saw of me (after losing the weight) and I didn't recognise myself.”

Magda explained: “That is a really strange feeling, to look in the mirror and not see yourself, you know?”

“To not have this body felt odd.”

Ah well.”

During the interview with Andrew, Magda also reflected on her contribution to the same-sex marriage campaign in 2017, the success of TV show Kath & Kim and hit movie Babe, plus her father’s experiences as a Polish resistance assassin in World War II.
